Required Credentials for Transfer Applicants
Who is a Transfer Applicant?
You are a transfer applicant if:
- You are a high school graduate/GED holder, and
- You will have completed at least 12 college credits after leaving high school and a college transcript showing these courses and final grades earned will be submitted within the required due dates.
Note: Current high school students who are taking college courses during high school should apply as first-year applicants, regardless of the number of college credits earned while in high school.
Creating Your Rutgers Community ID
If this is your first time applying to Rutgers, you'll need to create a CommunityID in order to begin your application. To create a Rutgers CommunityID, provide your email address and create an 8-character password. You should create only one student account and submit just one application for the year you intend to enroll. If you created an account already, log in using the email address and 8-character password submitted previously.
Using Your Rutgers Community ID
If you need to make changes to the information submitted within your application, you can do so online from your Rutgers CommunityID account. Features of your account include:
Getting Started
- Complete and submit your undergraduate application
- Pay application and enrollment fees
- View schools of application
- View a list of credentials that are still required
- View a list of received credentials
- View official admissions decisions
- Admitted students can accept their offer of admission and change their enrollment
Self-Service
- Change your account email (note this does not change the email address used to log into your application portal)
- Change or reset your password
- Update your mailing address
- Update your phone number
- Add a school to your application
Changes in legal name, date of birth, as well as corrections to or the addition of a social security number, must be done with documentation (a government issued photo ID for name change or date of birth update and a signed copy of a social security card to update or change social security number). Send a request to make these types of changes to our admissions offices. The student's application portal can then be updated to request the needed documentation and such documentation can then be uploaded directly to the application portal.
Always include your full name and email address used on your Rutgers application when sending communications about your application.
Online Application
Complete the online application carefully as it cannot be changed after it has been submitted. You can apply to as many as three Rutgers schools on a single application and independent decisions will be made for each school to which you apply.
You should submit only one application.
Please note, older versions of Internet Explorer are not supported. We recommend using the latest versions of EDGE, Google Chrome, or Firefox for your browser when accessing our applications.
Essay
The admissions essay is recommended for transfer applicants as an opportunity to provide additional information about yourself. Essays must be included in the space provided on the application and submitted on the application form. Essays may not be submitted separately. Be sure to clear any formatting before pasting your essay into the online application. If you do not clear formatting, the punctuation in your essay may change.
The essay is limited to 3,800 characters, including spaces.
Application Fee
Accordion Content
A non-refundable $70 application fee is required. (See fee information for the School of Health Professions.) Rutgers must receive the fee or a fee waiver before your application will be considered complete and ready for review.
Please choose one of these fee payment options:
-
- When you submit the online application, you may use the secure payment gateway to pay the application fee with a valid credit card.
- You also may pay the fee online with a credit card via the link on your Rutgers CommunityID account, but only after 24-72 hours have passed since you submitted the application.
-
- You may mail us a check made payable to "Rutgers University." Please include your full name and RUID.
-
- Applicants who are currently serving in the U.S. Military, are Military Veterans, or Military Dependents who plan to apply for educational benefits under the GI Bill receive a waiver of the application fee.
- If paying the application fee would pose a financial hardship and you do not have one of the above fee waivers, ask your college transfer adviser, a member of a social service agency, or other third party familiar with your financial situation to provide you with a letter requesting a waiver based on your specific circumstances
- Be certain your full name and RUID are clearly printed on the form or letter.
- If you received an EOF grant from any New Jersey college, please ask your previous EOF counselor/director to provide an EOF Transfer Form (PDF) and fax or mail the form to us.
- After submitting your application, you should upload your official waiver via your Rutgers CommunityID account within one week. Look for the red "Application Fee" link that will direct to the upload function. You can also fax or mail the waiver to us, but you only need to submit it once.

-
Transfer students who, after high school graduation, have completed less than 24 college credits are required to mail or fax a high school transcript. For transfer students who have completed 24 or more credits, submission of a high school transcript is recommended. The admissions committee may request a high school transcript from an applicant who has more than 24 college credits if they do not provide the necessary information on the application regarding entrance subjects completed in high school.
Your high school transcript must include all courses and final grades earned from grade 9 through graduation or leaving. Your transcript should certify any diplomas you have earned.
If you were educated outside the U.S., make sure you submit all the required documents.
-
An official college transcript from each college you attended must include all courses attempted and grades earned each term, through the end of August (spring applicants) or through the end of December (fall applicants). Please mail your transcript(s) to:

GED Results
Students with a GED diploma/certificate are required to submit their official results. A transcript of any and all high school work attempted is required in addition to the GED results.
EOF Candidates
The Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program is open to eligible New Jersey residents. Interested students should review the eligibility requirements. All transfer applicants seeking participation in the Rutgers EOF program, with or without prior EOF status, will be considered on a space- and funding-available basis using specific criteria established by the school at Rutgers where you plan to enroll.
- Transfer EOF candidates should contact the school’s EOF Director to inform them of the intent to transfer.
- Students who received an EOF grant from any New Jersey college should select the prior EOF option on the Rutgers application. Students selecting the prior EOF option and submitting an undergraduate admissions application should then provide an EOF Transfer Form (PDF) from the sending institution.
English Proficiency Examination Requirements
An English proficiency test score is required for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency or citizenship.
Talent Assessment for Mason Gross School of the Arts
A portfolio, audition, or interview demonstrating your artistic talent is required of all Mason Gross School of the Arts applicants. The department will contact you with specific instructions shortly after you have submitted your application for admission. To learn more about the talent assessment requirements and deadlines, please visit the school’s website for audition and portfolio information.
Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT) Requirements
For transfer applicants to the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy during the fall 2021 admisisons cycle, the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT) will be optional. However, we encourage you to take the PCAT if you can do so safely.
Letters of Recommendation
Letters of recommendation are not used for admissions consideration. The Rutgers application provides multiple opportunities for applicants to describe their accomplishments, activities, community service, and personal experiences. Students should be certain to complete all sections of the Rutgers application to describe themselves.
Standardized Testing Requirements
Due to the uncertainty of future test dates and availability of standardized tests, Rutgers will make submission of SAT and ACT test scores optional for students applying for spring or fall 2022 admission to Rutgers–New Brunswick and Rutgers–Camden. Rutgers–Newark no longer requires the submission of SAT and ACT standardized test scores.
If you are unable to submit a test score, or choose not to, you will still receive full admission consideration. Students who want to submit a standardized test score with their application for 2022 admission may still do so.
Exceptions
The following students populations will be required to submit at least one standardized test score to complete their application for admission:
- Students who have attended a school with non-traditional evaluation methods where traditional alpha or numerical grades are not assigned (i.e. mastery or narrative assessments)
- Students applying to the Rutgers–Newark BA/MD program and/or the Rutgers–Camden BS/DO program
Student athletes may choose test optional admission, but will be subject to NCAA eligibility standards for enrollment.
Students who are currently enrolled in high school or graduated from high school less than two years ago and do not have 12 or more subsequent college credits completed with grades by the application due date and who wish to submit a standardized test score with their application for 2022 admission may still do so.
Submitting Test Scores
Sending your SAT or ACT test scores? Rutgers has no preference about which examination a student submits.
- To be considered, all SAT and ACT scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to Rutgers. Unofficial test scores cannot be accepted.
- When requesting scores, use our SAT code 2765 or our ACT code 2592.
- We recommend students send all their SAT/ACT results to Rutgers.
- The SAT essay and ACT writing component are not required.
- We recommend including Rutgers as a receiving institution when registering for the SAT and/or ACT.
